Toronto born flautist Laura Chambers began her flute studies at the age of seven. She has since had the privilege of working with such artists as members of Nexus and composer Steve Reich. Ms. Chambers holds an Honours Bachelor of Performance from the University of Toronto and a Masters Degree from the Thornton School of Music at the University of Southern California where she studied under Professor James Walker. Previous teachers include Patrick Gallois, Susan Hoeppner, Camille Churchfield and Tara Helen O’Connor. She is currently pursuing her doctorate in music at York University.
Laura Chambers has appeared as a concerto soloist, orchestral player and chamber ensemble musician across North America. As a player of modern, baroque and world flutes, Laura has been a featured soloist with the Mississauga Symphony, the Kitchener Waterloo Chamber Orchestra, and a guest artist with the Toronto Symphony, at the Glenn Gould Studio, and the Ottawa Chamber Music Festival. She has recorded for the Naxos label and performed on award winning motion picture soundtracks. She is a founding member of the Charm of Finches, Canada’s only professional flute quintet and an active member of the GTA freelance scene. Laura has had the pleasure of performing with groups such as the Niagara Symphony, Talisker Players, Aradia Ensemble, Toronto Concert Orchestra, Ontario Philharmonic, and London Symphonia. Ms. Chambers also believes in the support and development of the arts at the community level and contributes to this with her work as principal flute of Orchestra Toronto and through outreach chamber concerts across Ontario.
As a teacher, Miss Chambers has had over a decade of private teaching experience with students of all ages and levels. She has also been a guest clinician at music camps and schools in both Canada and the United States. In addition to having an active private studio of students, Laura is also on the faculty of the Merriam School of Music, and the instrument specialist at St. Clements School.
