Participants will learn about stylistic and technical differences between playing classical viola and various non-classical genres, such as Irish, Balfolk and Appalachian. A brief introduction to genres will be covered through listening and learning pieces as a group. Since folk music is based on oral tradition, we’ll also start to develop skills of playing by ear, hearing chords and learning how to function in a jam.

Is this class for you?

For intermediate to advanced viola players.
Good listening skills and sight-reading ability are very helpful.
This class will not perform in the end-of-week concerts.
