Sybil Shanahan has played the cello for as long as she can remember. A travel lover, Sybil's lifelong commitment to the cello and the medium of chamber music has provided her with opportunities to perform around the world, including most recently debut performances in Buenos Aires and Brooklyn. A versatile performer comfortable across many musical styles, she performs with the classically based Tadioli Duo and she is the founder of Beaux Strings, an event music performance business for which she is also a published music arranger of pop songs for string ensembles. She is a featured performer on Solidaridad Tango's debut album, DISTANCIA, and between 2010-2020, she performed and recorded extensively with the classical group, Ensemble Vivant. Her first album, Caprice, was released in 2014 and features several previously unrecorded French Romantic cello duos with Coenraad Bloemendal. (Recordings)

This season marked Sybil's Tapestry Opera debut performing in the on-stage string quartet as part of their critically acclaimed production of “Rocking Horse Winner” and joining the musical team of Toronto's smash hit musical: Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 at the Crow's Theatre. She is also the string arranger and cello soloist behind the music of "The Sacred Project" by vocalist Jonathan Michael airing on YesTV through the Spring of 2024. As a freelance orchestral player, Sybil can often be found among the ranks of professional orchestras across Ontario from Thunder Bay to Niagara, and frequently in her home base of Toronto.

A strong believer in the power of music to create community, Sybil manages a private teaching studio for adult cellists based in Toronto's east end, and she has been on faculty at Lake Field Music Camp since 2012. Sybil completed her University education in Europe. She holds a Master’s Degree from the class of cello soloist Patrick Demenga in Switzerland and a Bachelor from the class of Gregor Horsch in Amsterdam.
